Windows God send
Equally stable to XP, but so much more freedom for people who know what they are doing, although windows XP professional does have some cool new features and still has config options, it doesnt have as many or as useful options as 2000. 2000 is also more compatible with games, even new ones designed for XP, it also allows a dual boot system if installed after XP, unlike any other OS. So you can have both. 2000 is compatible with new and old games and software. But Xp has trouble with older games, like dos based games. Windows XP also has too many restrictive rules. My advice is get 2000, it will work with old and new, and XP drivers for hardware work on it too, if you are not happy with it, get XP and setup a dual boot system. That way you can run old things on 2000, and newer things in the future with XP(which will probably bo XP only).

Summary:
Both 2000 and XP are as stable as each other

2000 has more options and is less restricitve

If you are going to get XP, get professional, it doesnt hold you back as much

windows XP does not like old software and TELLS you what to do, 2000 lets you do what YOU want. It is more user based and less selfish(remember all thsoe background running programs from 95+98?) unlike all the other OS.

Setup a dual boot system if you are not happy and run the old(which doesnnt work with XP) on 2000, and the future software(which will be XP only) on XP. simple.

PS, Most software cannot tell the difference between XP and 2000 anyway, because essentially they are exactly the same, except 2000 lets you do more, while XP looks pretty. Trust me, check the specs for yourself.

Enjoy! BUY IT!

SMALL BUSINESS HEAVEN
I RUN A FAMILY BUSINESS WITH 5 USERS ON A NETWORK AND WAS GOING TO UPGRADE OUR NETWARE 4.11 SERVER TO WINDOWS 2000 SERVER. MY ADVICE IS DONT,THE PEER TO PEER FEATURES OF WINDOWS 2000 USED WITH A GOOD NETWORK - FAST 10/100 HUBS ETC AND A ROUTER REALLY DO WORK WELL. THE MAIN ADVANTAGES ARE STABILITY - CANT REMEBER THE LAST CRASH, SECURITY - YOU CAN PASSWORD EVERYTHING AND NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE TELLS YOU UNLESS YOU RUN STEAM POWERED HARDWARE OR HAND CRANKED SOFTWARE EVERYTHING WORKS. ONE SMALL EXCEPTION SOME CD WRITERS. TAKING A BACKUP IS CHEAP - DO IT EVERY DAY WITH BACKUP EXEC ON CD OR ZIP DISC - DONT SKIMP ON BACKUPS - IT WILL SAVE YOUR HOURS LATER. USE A SOFTWARE PACKAGE SUCH AS SAGE LINE 50 VERSION 7.00 - IT INTEGRATES WITH EVERYTHING AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS BRILL. DONT USE PEGASUS OPERA - IT IS A POOR PROGRAM COMPARED TO SAGE AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE MAKES THE SPEAKING RAIL TIMETABLE LOOK EFFICIENT - AND ONE MORE BIG DIFFERENCE SAGE LISTEN TO YOU AND HELP YOU PEGASUS DONT. STICK TO MICROSOFT OFFICE 2000 - YOU MAY NOT LIKE UNCLE BILL, BUT EVERY OTHER BUSINESS PROGRAM DOES. HOPE MY HONEST OPINION HELPS

Impressive
The Professional edition of Windows comes across as a combination of the best bits of the Windows 9x series and NT combined. Installation proved to be no problem at all, a nice smooth process that completed successfully first time and detected my existing Win98 installation, even asking if I wanted a daul boot process in the process.

Installation took approximately 45 minutes and all of my compatible hardware (Webcam excepted ..) was detected and installed automatically - a dream really :)

Cosmetically, Win2K is not really any different to Windows 98 with the odd enhncement - the drop-shadows on cursors are a nice touch as are the fading menus (at least for the first hour of operation), its when you start to dig about beneath the surface that the OS-formerly-known-as-NT shines out. Security has been tightened up considerably, meaning some installation stuff requires the Administrator rights and happily Win2K is now DirectX compatible, so playing a few games now and again shouldnt be an issue except in the speed department (Win2K is NOT optimised for games).

I did hear disturbing rumours about application software refusing to run before I bought this package, so far I havent seen anything that wont perform but then I donlt run any DOS only stuff so I suppose Im lucky.

Its still early days for WIndows 2000 and Im still feeling my way around the OS, initial impressions are very good however and the combination of greater code stability, extra security features and the various twiddly bits added in this release make it a worthwhile buy for the more seriously minded. Games players are much better sticking with Win98 however as its DirectX performance is far better than this.
